wife of the man full in the face breaking her teeth and jaw she falls
into the sand]

[he returns laughing, both tend to the chains in the sun it is hot and 
afternoon,
they begin to pull away when the wife with bleeding mouth lunges to her
feet and runs madly to the man who hit her husband and pulling out a small
knife from her tattered gown slashes him expertly in the neck so he stands
spurting blood and is dead but does not know it]

[the tall slave takes the bloodied knife from her and stabs the other
tormentor in the eye, and he falters to the ground]

[both slaves look for and find the key and unshackle themselves]

the rest of the slaves have wasted no time and have felled the keepers with
blows and kicks so they are dazed, all now gather, and run for the
nearby marshes which have tall reeds and enough grass waist high to hide 
them till
nightfall]

[one says as they run, it is certain death now that we have struck and 
killed]

[the tall man pants we are free and therefore alive who know what tomorrow
brings stand tall you are of the tribe of Kilangari and none of your
forbears either kept slaves or were enslaved we are free and the earth 
is ours]

[all as one run and are embraced by the standing reeds and the trackless
marshes]

[two lie dead in the dust with eyes which stare up into the sunlight, 
the rest of
the market goers have run away those who keep slave have no courage]

[the red blood on the sand has dried to a brown]

[come night all traces will be lost]
