Tip of the day: Read 'nukkad' on the web at:

Dear Guptaji,
I was born a Gujarati, but have been brought up to be a human being. I
recently watched a part of the movie, "Gandhi" again and I have some
comments on what Gandhiji did that, in my little mind, was wrong.
(1) You have already mentioned the stubborn insistence on paying Pakistan
Rs. 50 crore.
>A glaring example, not known to many now a days, is that Gandhi >insisted
>that India must pay Rs. 50 crore to Pakistan towards assets >left behind in
>India, though pakistan did nothing of the sort in >reciprocation. When
>Patel, Nehru etc. protested, he simply went on >another fast. He broke the
>fast only when his wish was granted. Was >this democracy? Why was he one
>against 50 million? Why should he not >have listened to others?
(2) Another thing that he did wrong was that when Jinnah insisted on having
a separate state of Pakistan, he told Jinnah that Nehru, Sardar Patel and
every other Hindu will back down if Jinnah wanted to form a government, with
the only stipulation that he not cede from India. Though this was a noble
thought, the decision was taken emotionally and without consultation with
anyone. Gandhi, once again, was going to fast, if opposed. This is like
holding a whole country hostage.
(3) AND THIS IS PERHAPS HIS BIGGEST BLUNDER: When he was travelling by car,
he came across a bunch of people rioting in the name of religion, and he
said to them, Why are you doing this? I am a Muslim, a Hindu, a Christian, a
Sikh, all of these".
Instead of this he should have said, "I am NOT a Muslim, a Hindu, a
Christian or a Sikh. I am a spirit soul, just as you are all spirit souls
and so are all living beings everywhere in the three lokas."
When people come to this realization of "Brahman", they will stop rioting
and killing. Gandhiji carried the Bhagavad Gita with him at all times, but
he did NOT realize the central theme of the Gita:
"Sarva dharman paritajya
Mam ekam sharanam vraja
Aham tvam sarva papebhyo
Mokshisyami ma suchaha"
Translation:
"Give up ALL sorts of religion and surrender unto me. I will deliver you
from all sins, OF THAT THERE IS NO DOUBT."
That said, I am in accordance with ALL of the solutions you have mentioned
in your note (My additions are in parenthesis):
>a. Dismiss Modi. -- (AGREE)
>b. Impose central rule in Gujarat. Implement welfare and rehabilitation
>measures on war footing there. -- (IMMEDIATELY, BUT MAKE SURE NO GOVERNMENT
>OR OTHER OFFICIAL LINES HIS POCKETS WITH THE MONEY.)
>c. Take note of FIRs, follow them vigorously.Punish the marauders. --
>(AGREE)
>d. Follow the guidelines of the NHRC in all seriousness. -- (AGREE)
>e. Hold elections in Gujarat as soon as possible, in consultation with the
>Election Commission. -- (AGREE, BUT MAKE SURE NOBODY STUFFS THE BALLOT BOX
>OR SIPHONS ELECTION FUNDS FOR HIS/HER PERSONAL USE)
