Unfortunately, in my wedding's case, my wife's side of the family paid for
the entire wedding (which is traditional).

What is this, if it is not dowry ?
All expenses should be split equally as is done among Catholics and Parsis.

Parsis are even more clever in this regard.
They give you a postcard with the invitation asking you to specify how many
people will be coming, food preference etc. So no food is wasted and the
billing to both sides is accurate.
