Hello nukkies,

I couldn't resist writing.....

I did not know what caste I belonged to till I finished my 8th standard, I
studied in a school (St.Domnics Convent GHS) in Madras and they never asked
anybody for their caste! I moved to Kochi, Kerala where my parents were
asked to fill the caste in the admission form. They refused to do so, but
was forced by the principal. So they filled in (SC). The school admin said I
was eligible for a scholarship which my parents were not ready to take as we
were in a good position and my Dad did not want me to be distinguished from
the rest of the crowd but then we were forced to take as the school refused
to listen to us. This is one of the best girls school in Kochi (more than a
100 years old). 

I finished school and entered college, had to go through this experience of
filling in caste and community everywhere (because it was in my SSLC book at
this stage). My dad works for a public sector company and the kids get
scholarship but we have to go through an interview before that. My dad
refused to send me for the interview for reserved candidates and I came out
second in the southern states in the general category! In college I had a
very bad experience. My professor used to fail me in my exams because he
believed that students from that community did not have brains and got in
through reservation! Till I finished college and came out I did not blame
anyone as I felt the real failure was when we try to find excuses for
failing. But today I can say for sure, the reason being, I know I could have
made careless mistakes in theory exams, not written enough, not written to
the point so I could have failed. But how could I fail in a lab exam when I
have completely finished the experiment/code and produced the right results?


I have changed four jobs and have not used my caste anywhere to get into any
job! But I sometimes feel bad when people who live abroad for years together
ask about caste in their very first meeting.
