Guptaji wrote: A glaring example, not known to many now a days, is that
Gandhi insisted
that India must pay Rs. 50 crore to Pakistan towards assets left behind in
India, though pakistan did nothing of the sort in reciprocation. When Patel,
Nehru etc. protested, he simply went on another fast. He broke the fast only
when his wish was granted. Was this democracy? Why was he one against 50
million? Why should he not have listened to others?

What I had read on the episode gave me a slightly different picture. The 50
crore payment to Pakistan was not invented by Gandhiji but was part of the
partition plan. In the context of Pakistan's attack on Kashmir, Patel and
Nehru wanted to withhold the payment to Pakistan fearing that the money will
be used by Pakistan to buy arms to be used against India. Nehru & Patel did
not want to finance Pakistan's war against India in Kashmir. But, as Guptaji
mentioned, Gandhiji insisted on immediate payment and went on fast. Nehru &
Patel had to release the money immediately to Pakistan.
