times change. i was a heavy motorbike rider all my younger years
and was challenged to a race by every rich kid punk whose daddy
bought him a motorbike.

i rode an ariel single cylinder large bore in which i had fitted over-
size piston rings. with money earned over hot ember i bought a
wide span handle bar and became the absolute envy of a whole city
which then was maybe a hundred thousand.

i even had a distinctive jacket which was more ragzine [a name for
imitation plastic then] than real leather.

when my call came to go for interview for med school i had been
working on the bike in the morning and ran to appeared before the
board in the jacket, unshaven and with oily hands and interesting hair.

sure enough, a burly professor of surgery with some 40 years of
cutting up people under his belt, asks,

"are you in the wrong college? maybe you need the NED
[synonymous with the Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw college of
engineering].

and i got to do my tight rope gig right then, and it could have
maybe turned the wrong way. i said real cool [i was dying from
inside]:

"actually it is the right place. isn't this where they teach you about
nuts and bolts inside the human body?'.

silence. deadly. all nine stare. i feel like evaporating.

then the man leans forwards and growls: "it's the right place. but better
wash up first."

and i ask an entirely surplus question, and i regret the missed theatrical
aspect to this day. I ask: "i am in?"

a single word which makes my life, "in."

of course, that year 15,000 applied for 150 seats, and i am sure my
grades pulled me in. but then, who knows?

to this day i can out-maneuver anything on wheels without breaking
my neck. i learned to make the machine part of me.

i had to. it was home, transport, first love, freedom and friend.

out of kindness, no one ask how i parted from it.
