[nukkad] The vote for Arya ji

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tip of the day: Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already
tomorrow in Australia. -- Charles Schulz
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well Arya-ji here is my vote. Why did I not respond? the system of
taking/giving is so reprehensible that I did not think the average educated
person need even spend a moment thinking about it.

A system that had its origins many centuries - perhaps in Kerala and parts
of North Eastern India was the Matriarchal family. The man married into the
woman’s house/family and the woman lived in the security of her familiar
surroundings. The idea there was the property belonged to the woman and her
children and the man was a dependent. Of course there were instances of
partiality and misuse of power by the head of the household. in principle it
works well but corruption of society its values etc have led to a lot of
Kerlaites taking dowry. the prevalent I am told has crept in from the
Christian influence. I may be totally wrong here and I am quite willing to
accept that I am wrong. if netgeek or some others could correct me. the
Christian family's dowry system was the share the girl would receive. dowry
however has become a vicious circle - a man takes dowry to pay his sisters
dowry who offers dowry for her prospective sister in laws .. etc the cycle
is never ending.

At the risk of sounding gross let me recount a little story that concerned a
"friend". this "friend" a PhD from Banaras Hindu Univ was working as a post
doc fellow in mumbai when I met him over the months of
our acquaintance he mentioned that he was looking fwd to a huge sum in
dowry. another person who was listening in asked him a question that stopped
him dead in his tracks.. the rest of us collapsed in laughter and the
question was ...ur privates are they gold plated that u sell yourself like a
......

Do you subscribe to dowry and will you marry your sons,
daughters, anyone else you are responsible for, accordingly?

[ ] yes, I subscribe to it.

[ X ] no, I am against it.
