Is this is a one time transfer or something you will do often?
For the former, a serial cable is probably the best option since
it is easy to setup. And for a one time transfer, the slow speed is
not a big deal.

If this is going to be a routine affair, the best option is to buy
Ethernet cards for both PCs and an Ethernet hub and connect these
two systems using Ethernet. However, the expense and the effort
of setting up this network is not justified if you are going to
transfer only a few files each time or many files one time.

You will need to either buy a special parallel cable or wire
one up yourself.

Similarly, if you decide to use a serial cable, you will have to
modify a serial cable or buy a 'null modem' cable. The difference
is that a 'null modem' cable is easily available.

If you want to wire up the cables yourself, the details are at:

There are instructions for DCC at:
http://www.lpt.com/Support/DCC-SetUp/dcc-setup.htm
http://www.lpt.com/Questions/DirectParallelFAQ/directparallelfaq.htm

There are some instructions for WinXP systems at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q305621

If these don't work for you and assuming you use the serial
'null modem' cable, here is another way to transfer files:

1. Connect both computers via the serial cable
2. Start HyperTerminal on both computers (Start -> Programs -> Accessories
-> Hyperterminal)
3. Enter a name for the connection
4. At the next dialog box, choose 'Com1' for the 'Connect using' line
5. The next dialog 'Port Settings' lets you choose the data rate
for the transfer. Choose the highest value that is common to both
PCs. And choose 'None' for 'Flow Control'.

Now your systems are connected and ready to transfer files.

On your source PC, select Transfer -> Send file and select the file
to be transferred. You will have to select each file individually
which can get very tedious.

But I have used this method and know that it works.
