 Dear friends
Herebelow I am making one more attempt to convey some not so well known
facts  about India`s long and chequered history.
1) There is a basic Indian factor in establishment of today`s modern Yale
University in the U.S.A. This is so in the sense that in the year 1716  the
now famous Cunnecticut Collegiate school was in need of funds to  construct
a building of permanent kind for the purpose and was seeking    financial
assistance. The then Governor of Calcutta (or Madras ?), Mr. Yale sent two
boxes of Indian goods like muslin,calico,poplin, silk crap etc. which was
sold off in the market of Boston. The sales proceeds amounted to some 560
pounds ( which was the currency then ) which were utilised for the
construction of the first building of this world famous seat of learning.
2) The first direct military encounter of any Indian ruler with the colonial
European powers in India was in 1664 when maratha sardar Shivaji sacked
Surat, then the most thriving port city on the western sea board. Surat at
the time was under mugal occupation at the head of which was a mugal general
who ran away with his soldiers.However the British and the Dutch who had
business interests ( no political motives as yet ) in Surat and else where
in  India had much to lose and put up a brave resistance.Shivaji managed to
bag  up some one crore rupees from this successful raid.It was once again in
October 1670 when Shivaji raided Surat, but this time he dealt more
cautiously with the Europeans avoiding killings as much as possible.
Nevertheless for the second time in six years he collected huge sum of
wealth as booty.
