To 'shal,
dear sir, we used a parallel cable (cross wired) but it did not turn out to be all that easy with the windows dcc s/w. got stuck at the demand of user name and password. no stretch of imagination for this would work. so my son went to the net and downloaded a s/w called Link Maven (saw some reference to this at annoyances.org) and it worked with the parallel cable well.
 I suppose it could have been different and simpler with a serial cable. thanks for the pointers!
