Tip of the day: Everywhere is walking distance if you have the time.

i can answer for the aryans who came over with clearly Potamian
traditions, which centered around an earlier version of the
chatur-varana [4 castes of manu].

allow me to digress:

to this day the same tradition is practiced amongst the people of
what is now persia and revolves around the:

dastur - literally the law, religious here, keeper of usage
this relates to brahmins

sipeh salar - soldiers, those who bear arms
this relates to kshatriyas

tajir - business people, tradesmen
this is the vaishnava jana

kas e sakhtani - artisans
the shudras

there is no concept of the untouchable, except in terms of the
woman who is in her periods.

on to the question:

if you mean by vedic period the post-aryan invasion era, absolutely.
the marriage could not be consummated unless the dastur sanctified
it.

the ceremony is strikingly like the hindu ritual, and revolves around
a bride the groom cannot see. agni, aatasha there, is central to the
bond and all promises are sealed in the name of the flame.

as to the post vedic period, much of what became hindu tradition
to the north and middle india offtook from the aryan masters.

more interesting would be the pre-aryan traditions as these prevailed
in Dravid India to the great southern states.

hope this answers your question, even if it unprofessional.

arya.

ps. the 4 castes did not exist in Dravid hind. i might add to the latest
article by raviji on kerala, that the state also has the least incidence of
child slavery, bride burning, fetus killing and catering to caucasian
pedophiles.
