Tip of the day: "If thine enemy wrong thee, buy each of his children a drum."

I use dial up connection and apparently found PINE to be not very
suitable for offline use. A solution could be to run a news and mail
server. Through Internet search I learnt that Hamster and Mercury can do
the job.
I have couple of IMAP accounts on some of the *free IMAP servers*. My
idea is to fetch mail from these servers and store on the local IMAP
server so that PINE can be used to handle them. I want to do the similar
thing for newsgroups.
As for Hamster, it is meant only for POP access. I am not sure it can
offer IMAP access between client and itself. I have read that the new
Mercury is offering IMAP access. Does it also offer SSL/TLS? I guess
Mercury does not offer NNTP server.
Is there any other free stuff that can help me achieve what I want? Is
there any other way to do it?
