Tears of blood
People have a specific culture that encompasses societal experience of millenia, and is neither a product of yester years, nor lends itself to obliteration in the face of modern rapid changes, including the lingual ones. The sweep of English, made all the more wide with the global advent of IT and the uniquely Indian phenomenon of English worship and vernacular bashing, all in the name of so called anti-Hindutva secularism, has resulted in a situation where a remarkable poetic comment by the PM of a billion-and-more nation goes unnoticed by  the English press because the comment is in Hindi.

General Musharraf had mentioned in his speech that ‘Kashmir hamaari ragon mein hai’ [Kashmir is in our blood, our veins]. Responding to this, what Vajpai said in Manali was inimitable:

“Ragon mein daurate-phirne ke ham nahin kaayal,
Jab aankh se hi na tapka to lahoo kya hai?”
 
[A drop of blood; what is its worth?
If it runs from and back to heart;
The real blood, worth its name,
Is that which drips from the ocular frame].
