mozbackup is a backup utility to save ones skin while foramtting
upgrading or reinstalling.

thunderbird is the stand alone mail client though mozilla as such has
a mail client that is similar.

even if you download the newer versions and install in the same drive
the data is usually retained. you may not have to do anything more
usually.

it should be backward compatible, yes.
