During World War II the powder of dried and ground chicory roots was the only
"coffee" available for most Germans. "Real" coffee, as people used to say,
was rare and so very expensive.
Today this chicory coffe is still available in every supermarket. Some
parents prepare it for their children, older people enjoy it because it is
healthier than coffee.

South Indian patrons to the general store across the street from my
house would always get their coffee ground (instead of pre-packaged)
and ask the guy to add chicory to it. What does the chicory add to the
coffee? Do all South Indians add chicory or did I just happen to live
around a band of chicory-philes? And are there any commercial brands
(Bru etc.) that add chicory too?
[This chicory-related memory was jogged by a recipe for Vietnamese
coffee that listed chicoryfied coffee as one of the ingredients.]
