Chicory is much cheaper than coffee. It's added in India primarily to reduce 
the price per unit. Another reason is to reduce the bitterness and improve(?) 
the taste - as Indian taste for coffee is different from the Western palate.
While most people would have black coffee without cream when not having a 
latte, Indians usually have it with more milk and sugar.

Nescafe is t he only brand which has a premium brand of coffee which doesn't 
add chicory. All other brands - Bru, Tata, Sunrise add chicory.
