Depends on where you come from Loki! My home town of Perumbavoor in kerala is the second largest timber market in the country. With such a large timber industry almost every one of the 50 odd saw mills in the town have at least one elephant on the premises. So depending on the time of the day you are likely to see at least a few each day with the highest density being early in the morning and late at night. Elephants are still used to move logs in preference to tractors and other bits of machinery because of the ease with which they get thro difficult terrain. But yes outside of Kerala you are unlikely to see elephants on the streets every day.
