Long checkout lines at the grocery store are one of the biggest

A few years ago a local super market chain had come up with a wonderful
idea. The regular customers could apply for a loyalty card. Once you had
your loyalty card, each time one went to their shop, they had to slot
the card in a panel and pick up a hand held scanner. 

It was easy to walk around the super market, pick all one wanted, use
the scanner to scan the code and at the end go back to the panel, put
the scanner in the slot from where it was picked up and the card was
returned and a bill was produced. All one had to do then was to pay the
bill at the counter without queuing up.

I am not sure if the system still exists though.
