Solar, wind etc. may not replace the current system for large-scale
generation and distribution but they are great for individual needs. I
know of people who have installed solar panels on their roofs and are
not only self-sufficient but they also *sell* their excess power back
to the electric company. The equipment is not cheap but the cost
breaks even in a couple of years. And the benefits of living off the
grid and using renewables are priceless.

Like TV said, it is a shame to let all the solar energy go to waste.

As for hydrogen, it faces the same problem as the electric cars did.
Without a network of re-fuelling stations, people won't buy hydrogen
powered vehicles. And without enough vehicles on the road, what's the
incentive to build a network?

Managing the nuclear waste from these plants is the big problem. The
plants themselves are very efficient and a possible solution to the
energy problems but no one wants them in their area because of the
hazardous waste that's generated.

BTW, just read a news report about how Venezuela has the cheapest
gasoline in the world - cheaper than mineral water. A great example of
short-term populist thinking without thinking about long-term
consequences.
