I did not recommend this technique.

Shyam Garg did back in Jan 2002 (see
http://www.mumbai-central.com/nukkad/jan2002/msg00074.html). I
actually clarified that this method won't work as advertised and will
lead to a false sense of security (see
http://www.mumbai-central.com/nukkad/jan2002/msg00089.html).

pair.com is the hosting service for mumbai-central.com (and 'nukkad').
The mail server at pair.com saw an incomplete address and thought that
it was a local (pair.com) email address. (For some mail servers, you
don't need to use the full address when sending the mail to a user on
the same server.)  It decided to 'correct' the address by appending
'pair.com' so as to make it a complete address. That's why the message
that came through the 'nukkad' list server had !0000@!0000.pair.com.
