Dharma is a concept and a very lofty one at that. It is a way of life, possibly
unattainable, but nevertheless something to aim for.
It encompasses all virtues, including kindness (daya).
Dharma is complicated, to say the least. The path to Dharma is fraught with
issues of ethics, law, justice and righteousness.
What is righteous or virtuous when you are faced with ethical dilemmas? Is
kindness a higher virtue than justice? Is truthfulness a greater virtue than
allegiance? Does the end justify the means?
Not the least of the reasons why Gandhi chose the path of non-violence was his
belief that violent or revolutionary means was not in accordance with Dharma.
Worth comparing is the concept of "Jihad", which is an ethical struggle to be
human, and is based on principles of justice and freedom. With rise in
terrorism, the concept has been turned on its head.
Some questions on Dharma which perch you on the horns of a dilemma:
1. Was Dharmaraj Yudhisthir justified in keeping silent, when Draupadi's
vastraharan was on?
2. Was pitamaha Bhisma following dharma when he sided with Kauravas?
3. Are we following dharma when we take a person in coma off life-support?
4. Would you allow terminally ill persons to die according to their wishes?
5. Would you provide reservations to SC/ST/OBCs and perpetuate the
divisions or provide more opportunities for everyone and remove all
casteism?
6. Would taxing oil companies on their record profits be Dharma in a capitalist
economy like the US so that Americans can continue guzzling three times the oil
per capita as of Europeans?
and of course ...
7. Would you rather read Konversations, not understand and denounce it in
Nukkad, or would you Shift - Delete it, keep silent / praise Arya and appear
wise?
