Fourteen-year old Raj Kumar was lynched by the men manning the orchard at village Dwarika Nagar under Mushahri police station in Bihar's Muaffarpur district, a delayed police report said on Tuesday. Raj Kumar, while herding his buffalo, went to the orchard of Lakhan Mishra and plucked the litchis on Saturday. But he was soon captured by Mishra's men who beat him to death. They then threw body into a nearby pond from where it was found the next day, the report said. Vikram Sah, father of the victim, registered a complaint with the police accusing Mishra, his family members and his men manning the orchard for the killing. Deputy Superintendent of Police (headquarters) Shankar Jha said he had asked the Mushahari police station to arrest the culprits. 2. Laws, to be alive, must be invoked. Laws, to be invoked, must be known to people. Laws will be known to people only when they study law. People can study law in 4 ways: a. Voluntarily, studying for LL.B b. Voluntarily, studying for a distance learning degree of diploma course in law, offered by several universities. c. Studying, through sundry means, including websites and weblists, newspapers, books etc., about law. d. Studying law as part of routine school and college curriculum. Responsibility for this lies with the government and the educational planning institutions, like NCERT, etc. 5. Those who shun law or lawyers do incalculable harm to society. Just imagine: almost every prominent name in the Indian struggle for independence was or had been a lawyer! Try this exercise, if you have doubt. [Moral of Kalidas's story, before he became a scholar: Don't cut the branch of the tree on which you are sitting. Do not kick the stool from underneath your feet].
