Was a bit stupid to try to take off after crashing once and with a
ship so close to hand.
He obviously had engine issues and to try to take off was stupid. He
had flotation devices on the chopper so there was no fear of sinking.
Just switch off the engines and wait for help!
When I worked in Qatar we had a crash like this and it was the skill
of the pilot, incidentally an Indian, (ex IAF) that saved both the
passengers as well as the chopper.
