[nukkad] Comments - Advantage India : The Garbage Advantage

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tip of the day: No chain letters, virus hoaxes and good luck charms. See
<http://www.kumite.com/myths/> for a list of Internet hoaxes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Forwarding some of the comments/suggestions that I
received from my friends.

"I am NOT a cynic.
I may become one soon, though...

-- so what? If writing articles or preaching could
change habits, Christ
and Gandhi would not have been killed.

------ You got your answer. Preaching does not help..
FORCING does. Enforce
rules to make people PAY for the garbage they litter
around.. and you will
get a cleaner country. For once, be honest enough
that, we, most of the post
19th century Indians, are NOT civilized. We need to be
ruled, WHIPPED to
learn to behave. How else you could explain trillions
of 200 dB firecrackers
bursting during a span of 72 hours all over the
country.. that too in the
name of CELEBRATION, and mind you, several
environmentalist groups and
voluntary organizations were pleading for several days
for a comparatively
quieter Diwali. The most unfortunate part of all these
was that the children
of many of these so called Leaders of these Voluntary
organizations were
amongst the revellers. Here is one more information..
126 cases of fire were
reported in Delhi alone on 7th evening (caused by the
negligence by the
revellers).. did you hear even the Prime Minister ever
urging the nation to
celebrate in a more civilized manner?

----- Will not work. People who are more responsible
for transforming this
country into a garbage heap are the URBAN people..
it's also very clear from
your depiction of the two scenes. Or, to be more
precise, it's the people
who are influenced by the urban India culture who
should be held responsible
for this. And these people take enough pride in
announcing them as the
LITERATE lot, and they will not give a damn to
whatever you tell them.
-- Ever tried to protest a passenger smoking in a
crowded train or a bus?
Ever tried to protest somebody spiiting (while chewing
Paan?) in a crowded
place? Ever tried to protest somebody throwing
vegetable skins from the
kitchen window to the road below? I TRIED... at least
3 times in my life I
was on the verge of getting LYNCHED because I
protested.. in front of
curious fun-seeking onlookers. And if the offender is
a lady, behold.. there
will be a number of chivalrous men around to make you
bite the dust. The
protest works.. ONLY if you are in a group, where YOUR
safety is less
threatened. Don't take it's cowardice if a person
feels shy of leading a
protest just fearing the repurcussions.
---- What is the remedy? There is only one... a social
and political
revolution.... it can't come in a day, it also does
not come by announcing
beforehand that it's coming.. It's a storm that takes
everybody by
surprise.. the field is usually created much
beforehand. And the laudable
efforts people like you are putting together are
actually the stepping
stones for creating this field.

----- Commendable effort from your father. Here is a
man who led by
example. But alas, the offenders whom you are trying
to convert are blind to
examples even. Scarcely you could change a person by
setting an example....
did the example of your father change the attitude of
the sweeper towards
performing his duty? DID THE EXAMPLE OF GANDHI COULD
STOP THIS CO-PASSENGER
OF MINE SPITTING FROM THE TOP TIER OF THE
DOUBLE-DECKER BUS?

All said and done... YES, let's take a pledge to do
WHAT I CAN DO.. you
listed a few of them. One may add a few to this list,
but that is not
necessary. Even if one of us stick to the pledge of
doing what you
suggested, probably we could save our motherland (the
word has not become
irrelevant even today, example Kaargil) a few tonnes
of garbage heaped onto
her.

Congratulations for your effort . all the best.

Wishes"

"It is very eye-opening.
I'm proud to say that at least some people of our
generation r taking
action , and not just nodding their heads, without
doing anything, inspite
of knowing the ill-effects of pollution.
Anyway, it just goes on to prove one thing....
"Agreement is when people stop nodding their heads and
start nodding their
hearts."Not trying to be corny, but a heart felt "Yes"
is anyday better than a
formal "speech" of agrement.
Anyway, I guess I'm just getting senti, bcos this iis
a subject close to
my heart too."
Parvati Sabapathy
