Hemendra Bhanushali asked me about Thirukkural and Dravida Kazhakam. I have
explained a little here. If you have any more question, do ask me and I'll
explain as much as I can time permitting.

Hi Hemendra
Sorry for the delay. I was caught in many other activities.
Thirukkural is a book of 1330 small poems. Each one of them is made up of
just 1 and a 3/4 lines, the first line having four words (NOT exactly words,
but something similar) and the second line having three words (again NOT
exactly words).
It is divided into chapters, each chapter having 10 poems. So, naturally, it
has 133 chapters.
With this 1330 poems it covers all the aspects of life. For example, it
tells in one what a king should do, in another what a child should do, in
another what a father should do, what is right, what is wrong, ...
The author is 'ThiruValluvar'. Please note that 'Thiru' in Tamil is a way of
showing respect (for example, 'Mr', 'Shri', ...). So, the book name is only
'Kural', but with respect we call 'ThirukKural'. Similarly, the author is
'Valluvar'. But, with respect we call 'ThiruValluvar'. In fact, the author's
name is 'Valluvan', but to address others with respect we add the 'R' sound
at the end in Tamil and hence we call him 'Valluvar'.
One thing I like in it is: Even though the author did believe in many
things, at NO place, he forced his beliefs onto others. He just wrote what
is right and NOT what he thinks is right. For example, he did believe in
rebirths. But, to a question on why good people suffer and the bad people
enjoy at times, he said he did NOT know the answer. Please note that he did
NOT say that it was because of previous births people suffer/enjoy. He just
said that he did NOT know.
His wife's name was 'Vasuki'. She was supposed to be such a good wife that
if she is pulling water from the well and if her husband is calling at the
same time, she would leave it and go to him. And the water pot would stay
where it was (against all rules of gravity!, ;-)) Of course, here it is not
the science that is in question, but her affection towards her husband.
Thirukkural is a little more than 2000 years old.
Now regarding, Dravida Kazhakam: It is NOT a political party, even though it
is a party. What I mean: It NEVER contested in any election and will NEVER
contest in any! It was founded by E V Ramasamy alias Periyar. He was an
atheist and a social reformer. Tamilnadu owes a lot to him on the social
reforms. Of course, he had demerits too and the major one was, he had hurt
the feelings of many Hindus by criticizing and insulting Hinduism more than
other religions.
Anyway, if you wonder why this party doesn't contest in elections: If you
win in an election, you become corrupted and so to ensure that corruption
not getting into the party, this decision was made and being followed.
All major political leaders such as Anna Thurai, M Karunanidhi, ... were in
Dravida Kazhakam. But Anna Thurai, M Karunanidhi, ... wanted to contest in
elections (of course to acquire posts and to get corrupted, ;-)). But, they
could not leave the party with that sole reason and were waiting for an
opportunity, which Periyar gave them beautifully.
Periyar married a young girl at a very old age. I GUESS he was 60+ when he
married the girl was was not even 20 (again, I GUESS). They took this
opportunity and left the party to start Dravida Munnetra Kazhakam, whose
policies were 100% same as the parent party except for the difference that
this party would contest in elections. In fact, since the birth of the child
party Dravida Munnetra Kazhakam, they consider Periyar as the chief of the
party (At least in writing/records)
The original Dravida Kazhakam lost its flavor after Periyar's death and the
current leader 'K Veeramani' is more a dirty politician in all aspects other
than of course, the party doesn't contest in elections. Currently the only
two policies of Dravida Kazhakam is insulting Hinduism more than other
religions and supporting the party BLINDLY which donates to them the maximum
and so naturally, they BLINDLY support Jayalalitha as she had donated
unbelievable amounts to them when she was in power.
If you have any more question, do ask me.
Muthu
