Hi,
This is very nice.
It worked for some others also,
12-(12/8)+(5/2) = 12 -3/2 + 5/2 = 12 +(5-3)/2 = 13
20-(20/8)+(15/2)= 20 -5/2+15/2 = 25
but failed at, (better to say approximately correct)
24-(24/8)+(7/2) = 24 -6/2+7/2 = 24.5
It will definetely produce hypotenuse with sides less than
20,even for real numbers.
bye,
mlpreddy.

>Hi,
>We have a formula to find hypotenuse in a right angle triangle. ie let
>'y' be adjustant side and 'z' be base side then the hypotenuse will be
>x = sqrt(y*y+z*z). But long long back, in tamil nadu one poet wrote a poem
>to find this hypotenuse. The poem is (in Tamil):
>
>Oodia neelanthannai Orettu kooraakki
>Koorilea Ondru thalli kundrathil paathi serthaal
>Varuvathu Karnamthanea....
>
>English Translation:
>
>Oodia(biggest) neelanthannai(length) Orettu(eight) kooraakki(divide)
>Koorilea(among eight divisions) Ondru(one) thalli(subtract)
>kundrathil(with smallest) paathi(half) serthaal(add) Varuvathu(outcome)
>Karnamthanea(hypotenuse)....
>
>Equivalent Mathematical steps:
>
> 1. Take biggest length of base and adjuscent sides.
> (say 'a' out of 'a' and 'b' )
> 2. Subtract by its ratio of eight from it.
> (i.e., subtract a/8 from a); a-(a/8) ---> AA
> 3. Add half of the smallest of base and adjuscent side with 'AA'
> ( i.e., a-(a/8)+(b/2) )
> (Since, 'b' is the smallest now)
>
>Example 1:
> Formula: y=8,z=6 => x=sqrt(8*8+6*6)=10
> Poem: y=8,z=6=> x=8-(8/8)+(6/2)=10
>
>Example 2:
> Formula: y=4,z=3 => X=sqrt(4*4+3*3)=5
> Poem: y=4,z=3=> X=4-(4/8)+(3/2)=5
>
>Send this fact to all over the world and add proud to Our India..
>Nadu.
