Fear ...

One day I was sitting in my room on the Twenty second floor of a hotel in Chicago which looked out over Michigan Avenue to the lake beyond.It was a twenty two floor sheer drop down to the side walk.There came a rap at my door.

I opened it, and there stood a young fellow with a pail and some cleaning cloths and a window wiper."Would it disturb you if I washed your windows ? he asked.

No,Come in I said.While we were talking he walked over and looking in my direction,pulled up the window, snapped on his belt and put one leg out.

"Hey!" I said,"Its twenty two stories down the street."

"Well, so what? I know it, but you can't wash the windows from the Inside."

"I know, but there you are with one leg out the window,Just like that."

"Don't let that bother you,"he told me."I know how to do this."

"Do you really like this window- washing business?" I asked.

"Sure" he replied."I'm way above everybody else all the time."

"But how are you able to do it without being afraid?"

"Oh," he replied,"that's simple.The first thing is to fasten your belt and be sure that it is fastened.Then you have faith in your belt.you know it will hold.Then you knock on wood, say a prayer, and get busy."

Whereupon he climbed out and went to work,grining me through the window pane.He whistled a gay and merry tune.In a jiffy he was back inside, then out the other window,still Whistling, humming  and even singing a snatch of a song.

"You seem happy," I commented.

"Why not?" he replied."Nothing's worrying mee.I'm enjoying myself".

"And you are never afraid?"

"Of course not.What is there to be afraid of ?There's nothing to it."

This fellow,w ho obviously had a normal mind devoid of fear, made a great impression on me as one of those many terrific people you find everywhere.He had one of the most valuable assets a human being can possess - a good, sound,unmixed-up, normal mind in which was no fear psychosis.

He made me think of a friend who was having a struggle with a disease.This man attacked his illness in the same businesslike manner in which he dealt with all his affairs.He had it- that was that - and he just proceeded to fit the treatments into his daily schedule.He went on with his business, never showed a quiver, and remained on top of the situation.Once I asked him,"At any time during the experience have you been afraid?"

"Well,let me think" he replied."Yes, there was a minute or two when I was afraid.That was when my temperature stayed at a hundred and four degrees for two days.the thought just crossed my mind that may be I might not make it.But that was only temporarily.I just began to apply common sense and as I did so the fever went down.

All the common sense I have tell me that the doctors on this case are confident that they are doing the right thing, and I have the respect for their skill."

The he added"If they were'nt,I would still be in a good hands.God is always looking after us.Any way ,When I get into an airplane I am not afraid.  I know the equipment is good.I know the plane has been well serviced and that the pilots and engineers know their business.   I don't sit there being afraid.I apply common sense to it.So with physical existence.   I am in a scientific universe. Either here or in beyond, I will be given every good care.With all this going for me, why wasting any time being afraid?"
