Luck...
While serving in Korea, J Richard Munro co - Chairman and co-CEO of Time Warner,Inc., was badly wounded. Some might call that bad luck.Munro didn't.He described the incident this way "It was pitch dark, but I heard the grenade land beside me and roll past my head to feet before going off and throwing me twenty feet in the air.It had blown my legs all to hell, but it could have stopped at my head and blown that up.I have had that sort of good fortune all of my life."
To hear Munro tell it, his entire career involved one stroke of luck after another."Another time, after being number two man at Sports illustrated, I was sent to Chicago to run some newspapers. Two months later, the publisher of Sports Illustrated was promoted to head up Life magazine and there was a meeting to choose his replacement.I was the likely candidate, but one man said"We just moved him to Chicago two months ago.We can't bring him back to New York so soon".My old boss asked ,"Why the hell not?" and I was back in the running. Now if it hadn't been for luck , my old boss would have been in the men's room, never have made that comment, and I wouldn't have gotten the job".
Was becoming the publisher of Sports illustrated really a matter of luck? Or did Munro get the job because he was the best candidate for it? We will know for sure.
But the more important point is that Munro thought of himself as "Lucky enough to be Successful" - and he was.
He expected factors he had no control over to break in his favor - and they did.He looked for signs of his good fortune - and found them. His attitude improved his luck - and yours can too.
We all have both good luck and bad luck.If we dwell on our misfortune, mulling over our bad breaks and unfavorably comparing ourselves to people who seem to "Have all the luck" we undermine our self confidence, talk ourselves out of talking risk that could advance our careers, and as result, stop short of our goals.
Conversely if we think about our good fortune, remind ourselves of the lucky breaks we have had over the years, and tell ourselves that we have every reason to expect good luck in the future,we feel more self confident,We take more risk.We experience more success. And we get luckier.
You will be as lucky as you think you are, as lucky as you feel, and as lucky as your overall attitude allows you to be.
So you are wise to adopt the attitude that the late Norman Cousins conveyed when he said "I have been relentlessly pursued by luck all my life".
