Child Relief & You
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1) What is CRY?
CRY (Child Relief & You) was started in 1979 as an INDIAN reaction to
the unjust situation of Indian children, by ordinary people willing to
make a difference. It is an independent organization; its chief
objective is to restore to children their basic right to food, shelter,
education - in short, a future.
2) What is CRY's mission?
In the words of Mr Rippan Kapur, the founder of CRY, "it is to make people
responsible for the situation of the deprived child and to motivate them
to collective action to change the situation, thereby giving themselves
and the child an opportunity to realize their full potential".
3) And how does it go about completing it's mission?
The purpose behind CRY, was the realization that there were people with
full time jobs and family responsibilities, who have the means and skills
to help less fortunate children but feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of
the problem. There were many agencies doing things for children but who
were constantly strapped for manpower, funds and infrastructure. The real
task therefore was to bring together these people and transform their
individual contributions - or skill, time or money - to resources that
would help neglected children.
CRY makes sure that the contributions are put to good use by directing
the money to its partner-projects, all of which are run by dedicated
individuals who work with under-privileged children. Released from the
burden of fund-raising, they are then free to concentrate on the task
at hand. CRY also provides whenever possible and whenever needed,
professional expertize in the form of training as well as material
assistance. This is done by continuous interaction with the project and
evaluation of its developments.
4) What criteria is used to select organizations to be supported by CRY?
While regarding each programme as individual and by its own merits,
the following criteria are applied.
(a) Most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups :
Children in Bonded labor
Street and slum dwelling children
A special emphasis on the girl child is given.
(b) New comers to the field of social work.
(c) Small organizations which can not get money from funding agencies.
(d) Community development programs that focus on women welfare.
Please write to cry@wnx.com for a list of the organizations supported by
CRY.
5) Is CRY affiliated to any religious or political organizations?
No. It is not affiliated to any political or religious organization.
It does not have any preferences based on political or religious grounds,
while selecting the partner projects.
6) How can an individual help CRY?
There are many ways you can contribute - naturally and effortlessly.
CRY can show you how to begin. You can :
* Buy CRY products (Assorted greeting cards, children
books and presentation folders, etc...)
* Donate to the Education Sponsorship Scheme.
* Sponsor CRY ads.
* Donate your expertise.
* A Call for CRY - program with AT &T
* Bridal Registry with CRY
* Involve your organization: ADOPT-A-PROJECT scheme
* And volunteer any other help.
7) What is the difference between CRY and CRY Inc. ?
CRY, Inc. was set up in USA in 1991 to support the activities of CRY in
India. In conformity with IRS regulations, CRY Inc. is an independent
non-profit organization (a public charity) with its own bye-laws and
articles of incorporation. CRY Inc. obtained the tax-exempt status in USA
in 1993 after establishing a two-year record of activity.
8) Are all US contributions tax deductible?
All contributions to the Education sponsorship scheme and donations are
tax-exempt, and you will get a receipt. Obviously, the money sent towards
buying CRY products is NOT tax-exempt.
If you are an employee, please explore whether your employer participates
in the matching donor program, thus doubling the donation to CRY with the
matching donation of your employer.
9) What is the Education Sponsorship Program?
This is a program by which an individual can contribuet to the grassroots
projects in India. These donations are pooled together to support projects
run by social workers in tribal, rural and and urban communities all over
India. You can send your annual contribution of $120 or your half-yearly
contribution of $60 towards CRY's Educational Sponsorship Scheme.
Or, you may donate any amount you wish.
Again, If you are an employee, please explore the possibility of doubling
the contribution to CRY with the matching donation of your employer.
Several big companies participate in Matching Donor Program (MDP).
10) What is the ADOPT-A-PROJECT Program?
It is felt by a number of donors that they would like to associate with
a specific project in India. But maintaining records of each donor's
association with a different project results in significant administrative
costs. With the ADOPT-A-PROJECT Program, your organization can sponsor
a project either completely/partially and all your contributions will be
directly sent to the project, without any administrative costs of CRY.
You will be informed of the progress of the project at regular intervals.
11) Can I be associated with an individual child?
Since CRY doesn't have any projects of its own, it is not possible for
CRY to maintain a donor-project-child communication. Instead, CRY has the
above two programs wherein either you can adopt a project or donate towards
its educational sponsorship scheme.
Also, CRY doesn't assign a child to you in order to avoid the overheads
involved in maintaining the communication and keeping a one-to-one record
(which actually cuts into a significant portion of the monthly donation).
12) How can I order for the CRY products?
Please write to cry@wnx.com with the subject ORDER FORM.
13) Does CRY have a WWW link?
Yes. Please visit CRY page at http://www.us.cry.org
14) Does CRY have an office in countries other than India?
Right now, it has an office only in USA. The address is
Child Relief and You Inc.
48 Terrapin Lane
Mercerville, NJ 08619.
[Donors from outside USA are requested to send the donations in US $ checks
or as money orders made payable in US $. (to avoid a large processing
fee).]
15) What is the program 'A CAll for CRY'?
AT&T has this Association Loyalty program, which is being carried out
through a company called ICM (International Community Marketing).
CRY enrolled in this program with ICM.
If your long distance is AT&T with a monthly long distance bill of more
than $25, and if you register in this program, AT&T will automatically
