The nail-biting is over now.
OVERALL TALLY
MAJORITY FOR VAJPAYEE WITH 50 SEATS STILL TO GO
As of this moment a total of 486 results have come in. Of these,
theBJP-alliance has won 271. The Congress alliance has won 123,
theCommunists have won 39 and others have won 53.
This means that the BJP alliance has achieved a majority even if itdoes not
win a single of the remaining 50 seats.
Of the remaining 50 seats results for which are to come in, theBJP-alliance
leads in 21 seats, the Congress alliance in 13, thecommunists in 2 and
others in 14.With results and trends from almost all seats in, it is a
bigdisappointment for the Congress Party and its allies. Their combinedtally
is just 137 seats, 44 seats less than in 1998.
Subramanian Swamy, the Janata Party chief and the man who contributed to the
bringing down of the Vajpayee Government, lost his deposit in Madurai,
yielding the seat to a Marxist rival.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi defeated her formidable rival Sushma Swaraj
(BJP) in Bellary. Ms Gandhi was also leading in Amethi.
The forging of pre-poll strategic alliances with several regional parties
helped the BJP in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal and
Haryana. But the anti-incumbency factor worked against it in Gujarat and
Karnataka.
At State Level in Andhra Pradesh,
The Telugu Desam is set to come back to power in Andhra Pradesh with a
comfortable majority, by winning about 190 to 200 seats in the Assembly,
while the Congress is set to vastly improve its performance with a tally of
about 90 to 100 seats. The Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu,
described the verdict as a ``positive vote for development'',
At State Level in Karnataka,
Providing a stunning contrast to the situation prevailing in the rest of the
country, the Congress(I) was set to sweep the Assembly elections in
Karnataka, frustrating the claims of the BJP and the Janata Dal (United),
according to indications. The people seemed to have rejected the BJP-JD(U)
combine in clear terms. The ineffective and poor performance of the
J.H.Patel Government seems to have turned popular will against it and even
the last minute seat-sharing arrangement between the BJP and JD(U) has not
worked.
Cheers,
Sreeram
