MAN'S FIRST VOYAGE TO THE MOON....
By Dr. K.P. Misra
On 16 July 1969, for the first time in human existence of four million years
on our planet earth, a successful journey to the moon was carried out by
three brave American astronauts: Neil Armstrong, Edwin Buzz Aldrin and
Michael Collins.
Neil Armstrong was the commandant of the project and commandant of the Lunar
module. He was the first one to land on the moon. Michael Collins was the
commandant of the command module. Millions of people all over the world
watched this event on Television and heard about this historic flight on
radio. This event has been described as one of the greatest events in
recorded human history.
Twenty -thousand United States industries were involved with 300,000
Americans who fashioned, fabricated and manufactured the eight million
working parts and ninety-one engines of Apollo 11 spacecraft.
Apollo !! spacecraft weighed 3,100 tonnes. Of the 3,100 tonnes, 2,200
tonnes were the fuel alone consisting of liquid oxygen and hydrogen, kept
liquid at an impossible to believe temperature of minus 2930 for oxygen and
minus 4230F for hydrogen.
At the lift-off the five Saturn engines gave a thrust of 7.6 million pounds
on the launching pad which is equivalent to 160 million horse power. In the
first blast lasting a little over two minutes the five engines consumed
559,218 gallons of liquid oxygen and kerosene at the rate of 3,500 gallons a
second.
Apollo 11 rocket took off from the Cape Kennedy Space Centre. Apollo 11
spacecraft alone cost the United States government 355 million Dollars. To
receive the transmissions from the space there were 210 feet steerable
antennae at Gold Stone and Parks, each one weighing 100 tonnes with an
acre-big dishes which could be aimed at any moving target with an accuracy
of 1/3,0000.
On the day of Apollo11 spacecraft taking off there were more than a million
people around Cape Kennedy to witness this historic flight. There were
3,000 boats and ships in the Atlantic Ocean near the area of launching to
witness the event. Three hundred private aircraft were circling in the sky
around the area to witness the flight. Two hundred and fifty thousand cars
had come to the area from all over the United States and abroad. The event
was being covered by 3,000 reporters in 30 languages at the same time.
There were messages from 73 Heads of States from all over the world,
literally from A to Z, A for Afghanistan and Z for Zambia.
Food for the Apollo 11 astronauts were specially prepared as freeze-dried
items and served in aluminium tubes to be squeezed into the mouth. The
astronauts had in fact 60 different dishes.
Man's footprint on the moon will last for 500,000 years as there is no air,
water, rains or floods on the moon. The moon has no atmosphere and
therefore cannot transmit sound waves. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin put
the first human steps on the moon following each other with an interval of
20 minutes. The first words of the first human Neil Armstrong which have
become immortal were "That is one small step for a man, one giant leap for
mankind". The second man Buzz Aldrin's first words were " Beautiful,
Beautiful".
The astronauts discarded on the surface of the moon cameras, tools and other
equipment worth millions of dollars because on the return journey they had
to be light with less availability of fuel. Among the discarded items were a
black and white television camera costing 250,000 dollars, a Kodak camera
worth 50,000 dollars and a Hasselblad camera costing 11,000 dollars. Thus,
the moon has become the most expensive junk yard in the Universe.
There was excitement all over the world about this historic event which
touched the minds and souls of hundreds of millions of people on the earth.
