DIVORCED FROM REALITY   
AMEENA, a young telephone operator in Delhi, came 
home one evening to find her husband in a clinch with 
another woman. Even before she could collect her wits, 
he turned on her and pronounced talaq thrice. Ameena's 
marriage of six years was over. Worse, he refused 
to pay her maintenance beyond the iddat period (three 
menstrual cycles). Today, two years later, thanks 
to the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) 
Act of 1986, Ameena still awaits her due from her 
husband.

CLOCK IS fast approaching 9 p.m. For rest of the country it may be time to 
switch on televisions and watch popular sitcoms. But for the people of 
Taloja, a village 50 kms away from Mumbai; the choices are limited. They can

either offer namaz or study or even sleep.

The village does have TV sets and even a cablewalla .Then why? The people 
are merely following the diktats of Abdul Hamid Ibrahim, the maulana of the 
local mosque.
