B E H A P P Y! - SWAMI ANUBHAVANANANDA'S WEEKLY COLUMN

	         		CONTRADICTIONS:

Let us do an experiment. Take a square sheet of white paper. Fold it
four folds and take out a centre piece from the folded paper. Again unfold
the paper.
What we see is a hole in the paper. Now, the question is what is the
'hole'? Is it something existing ? It is the presence of something called a
'hole' or infact is it an absence of a paper in that area which is called as
a 'hole' ? Therefore a hole is an absence of paper. This absence of paper
creates an illusion of a presence of a hole which is in reality an absence.
Let us conduct a second experiment. In space, we shall try to create
a hole.
Let us imagine that the space is a two dimensional variable like
that of a sheet of paper and we have created a hole in that space. (Don't
ask how) Space is essentially an absence, an emptiness, a vaccum and the
absence of the space will be called as the hole in the space. What will be
the description of the hole in the space? It will be absence of the absence
or emptiness in the emptiness or vacuum in a vacuum. In other words, it will
be presence or non-emptiness or solidness. This is how the hole in the space
means the presence, while the hole in the paper means the absence.
In this vast empty space, wherever holes appear, they appear in the
form of presence. Thus everything and being that is existing in this
universe is an expression of absence of absence i.e. absolute presence.
It is something like looking at the dark sky when many stars are
peeping out through the tiny little holes in the dark dome of night sky.
This can be viewed in two ways.
	(1)	When our attention is on the space, we see the stars as
different from each other and this assigns multiplicity to the presence, as
many stars are present.
	(2)	It is one infinite light behind the dark empty dome of space
which is perforated in many places and thus the same light, which is
one-without-a-second peeps through many holes. This perception is the result
of our attention being focused on the presence of light and not on the
absence that the space is.

Former is the view of the ignorant, the latter is the vision
of the wise. When the space in our head becomes predominant factor in our
perceptions, then the outer space becomes more important giving rise to the
multiplicity a valid reality. When the consciouness or the light of the
wisdom becomes predominent in our vision, the wisdom of oneness in spite of
multitude of perception is experienced.
Presence is the reality and absence gathers the status of
reality with the substratum of this eternal presence. When we are able to
extend our presence as the substratum of the absence that is perceived we
have reached that 'hole' in the space which is the 'WHOLE', which has as if
many holes through which the Supreme functions. Let us discover the absence
of absence and then be present in the presence and never be absent in the
absence.
Meditation is neither an achievement nor a failure, it is
neither a journey in time nor in space. It is neither aimed at gaining
something or losing something. Infact, meditation is neither an action to be
carried, nor a distance to be crossed. It is not an effort to be put nor
become anything as a result of above exercise.
Then, what is meditation? It is undoing all that we have
been doing. It is losing all that we have gained. It is unbecoming of all
what we have become, as a result of our efforts. It is being without
becoming, life without living, bliss without enjoying.
When all efforts die, when all thoughts disappear and all
enjoyments are withdrawn, then true meditation is lived.
Therefore, Do Meditation to Undo Meditation.
