OVERCOME PROCRASTINATION
Though the will to do good is there, the deed is not. The good which I want
to do, I fail to do (Rom. 7:18).
Procrastination is the art of postponing things, putting them off until the
last minute, then rushing to finish them - and sometimes not getting them
done at all. For some, it is the continued avoidance of starting a task and
seeing it to its conclusion. For others, it's a matter of doing the easier,
low-priority chores instead of more difficult, high-priority tasks.
Confronting procrastinating:
*	Face the truth. Putting off what has to be done doesn't make sense.
Ignoring obligations and responsibilities does not make them go away.
Procrastinating usually compounds the situation, leaving a monumental task
instead of a simple chore.
*	Decide to change. Convince yourself of the need for a change.
Your bad habit costs you lowered self-confidence, strained
relationships, feelings of anxiety, guilt, resentment, stress, and despair.
*	Analyze your history. Write down two or three times when you've
procrastinated, describing the circumstances and identify the motive. What
do you do instead? (Clean your desk, raid the refrigerator, take a nap, call
a friend?)
*	Make a list of all the tasks you tend to put off. Then prioritize
that list from the most to least important. Can some of these tasks be
delegated or dropped?
*	Set reasonable, reachable goals that are specific and concrete.
Break big jobs into manageable chunks, then do them one by one. Instead of
trying to clean your entire office, clean out your top desk drawer.
*	Visualize the benefits of completing your project - sparkling
windows, a restored friendship, loose-fitting jeans. Promise yourself a
reward and follow through when your goal has been achieved.
*	Enlist the support of others as you battle procrastinating.
Tell someone what you are working on and when you want to
complete it. Call for support when you are tempted to quit or need help
getting unstuck.
*	Learn to relax. Stress is constant companion to the chronic
procrastinator. Learn to be calm when you feel yourself tensing, rushing,
panicking. Use scheduled time for leisure and recreation - not as another
delaying tactic, but to energize you to action.
*	Use your time. Utilize the fact that energy levels vary throughout
the day. If you are a morning person, schedule work on your tough, important
jobs during your prime time. Schedule easier tasks when you are less
attentive.
*	Make an "unschedule" of your already-committed activities. A major
mistake procrastinators make is being unrealistic about time. They plan too
much, overestimate the time they have available, and underestimate the time
it takes to do a job.
*	Use even little bits of time. Often procrastinators never start a
project because they insist on having the full amount of time it will take
to complete the job. One rarely has several hours free all at once, but
everyone can find 15 minutes or a half-hour here and there.
