B E H A P P Y! - SWAMI ANUBHAVANANANDA'S WEEKLY COLUMN
CONTRADICTIONS - PART 6
Contradictions are mutually cancelling variables which exist in
mutual dependence and ultimately are absent in each other. For example, Day
and Night. Day is absent in the night and night is absent in the day. When
night arrives, day departs and vice versa. Thus day and night forms a pair
of contradictions. Everything in this world exists as a pair of
contradictions. Technically they are called as 'dvandvas'. It is a nature of
this world, that it is presented to us in pairs of opposites. Not
recognizing this fact, we insist bias for certain things and wish that the
world existed according to our choice. This is the seed of all our
tragedies. Is it not easier to accept the arrival of the day after the night
and also that of the night after the day? Is it not easier to have sweetness
followed by absence of sweet and vice versa than to expect only sweetness to
prevail? In fact the alternating of the pair of opposites sharpen our
faculties and allow us to enjoy everything in this world with new zeal
although the things are old. An uninterrupted taste of sweetness loses its
charm for the enjoyer as well as the instrument of enjoyment, the tongue. On
the contrary, sweet followed by different taste gives us more joy when we
take sweets. This secret of looking at our experience in the field of
mutually contradicting pairs of opposite is known to the wise, hence they
are able to enjoy every moment of their life in this very world where we,
average mundane people suffer every moment.
The vision of the wise is focused to 'THAT' which is manifesting as
the pair of opposites and not to the contradictions which are expressed. A
goldsmith fixes his vision on the gold and evaluates every ornament
irrespective of their names and forms and thus never suffers the presence or
absence of these different names and forms and does not get deceived. The
technique of lifting the vision from the pairs of opposites is as follows:
1. Recognise that everything in the world necessarily exists in
mutually cancelling pairs of oppopsites.
2. These variables, being mutually cancelling, certainly disappear
when we give up the microscopic vision of our life and have the
macroscopic vision on the great grand Totality of life.
3. The factor that helps us in developing this vision is to have
patience, which helps us to come out of the impact of one member of
the pairs of opposites which will certainly be cancelled and nullified with
its own opponent member.
4. Every pair of opposite, i.e. all contradictions are supported by
something which is ever present in every contradictions. Taking the
first example of Day and Night-day and night are the manifestation of the
same principle called as sun. Sun is the source of daylight as well as the
absence of daylight, namely the night. The sunlight is neither bright nor
dark and yet if you want to express sunlight we will have to use a language
of contradictions namely sunlight is dark because in sunlight both the
brightness and absence of brightness are simultaneously present and hence
cancel mutually and leave the sunlight uneffected by their presence or
absence.
5. Let us apply these principles in our daily life:
i. All the colours existing in their variety and mutually
cancelling each other exists in our eyes and
hence the eyes are not affected by any one of them. Therefore to go beyond
the impact of colour poisoning, the way is to focus attention on the eyes.
ii. All the thoughts good or bad are present in the mind and
hence the mind is an abode of both good and bad thoughts and hence
beyond the impact of both good and bad. The way to go beyond the good and
bad thoughts is to focus the attention on the mind and not on the thoughts.
iii. We are present abundantly, illuminating every joy and sorrow
which mutually cancel in us. The only way to go beyond joy and
sorrow is to focus the attention to the Substratum ' I ' which is supporting
these pairs of opposites.
The load of above thoughts is lived lightly in our life when we
learn to live lightly in the Light of Wisdom. Wisdom expresses as lightness.
Lightness manifests as absence of seriousness and when we learn to take
serious affairs lightly in a technique enunciated in above lines we will be
able to contradict everything that needs to be contradicted and are left
with never contradicting Beauty, Joy, Peace, Happiness, that we are!
The vision is presented by the Lord in the 9th Chapter of Bhagawat
Gita wherein He presents the truth in the language of contradictions. When
the Lord says these statements, they seemingly contradict each other, but
when understood correctly they contradict our wrong understanding and
discover the Truth, hidden behind these seeming contradictions.
The Lord says:
1. The whole world of different forms is pervaded by Me, the
Formless. (Is it not a seeming contradiction that the formless is
present in every form? But in fact all forms can be pervaded only by that
which supports every form and is without any particular form, like water is
formless hence adopts the form of every pot in which it is poured. Thus
water can claim that 'I the formless pervade all the forms').
2. All things and beings are in Me, but I am not in them.(Another
contradiction which needs a sympathetic appreciation. It is true
that all the ornaments exist in the gold and the ornaments cannot exist
without gold. However, the gold can always exist without any particular
shape of an ornament. When the ornaments are destroyed, i.e. melted away,
what is lost is the name and form but not the Substratum gold- This is
present in the birth and death of every ornament and hence is never born
with the birth of an ornament nor does it die with the death of an
ornament). Hence statement: They are in Me but I am not the shareholder of
their joys and tragedies'.
3. In fact, these things and beings do not exist in Me. This
contradiction accepts the multitude of things and beings and yet
rejects their presence. It is from the gold's absolute standpoint that
nothing ever existed, exists or will exist, other than the gold. In fact,
the gold does not recognise the presence of ornament as a load of something
which is other than itself, hence, from the Absolute standpoint all
contradictions get negated and never ever exist.
This vision of 'Absolute' contradicts all contradictions and the
vision of relative perception supports every contradiction. Hence the Divine
Vision is the vision of Absolute perception which is the only way to go
beyond the pangs of sufferings of relative perceptions. Let us be absolutely
contradicted in every pair of contradictions and discover our Absolute Being
which rejects every contradiction.
