Ullas, you are correct about having IT returns etc. but that holds true
when going for the visa interview.

The orig. question was about showing the availability of funds during
the app process. Since this is a less formal requirement all you need
is a signature from your sponsor (typically your family) that they
have the funds. In some cases, you can even skip this document from your
application packet. In case you are admitted, the college will need to see 
the proof before they send you the official documents (your I-20).
