Tip of the day: Always proofread carefully to see if you any words out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Onam in Malayalam means Shravan (not Shraavan) in Sanskrit. This is the name
of the nakshatra (constellation) in which the moon is on the day of Onam. I
believe the Malayalee calendar is based on nakshatra, rather than on tithi.
The moon is in Shravan nakshatra every month. The month in which the sun is
in nirayana sinha raashi is the month in which Onam falls. (If anyone has
any means to check the veracity of this statement, please do check. I shall
be obliged.)
Thiru is Shri, as in Thiru Karunanidhi. Thiru + Onam is Thiruvonum.
Uthruttathi means Uttarashadha nakshatra. It is fifth from Shravana.
The return of the King Bali is also celebrated in Maharashtra and Karnataka
but on a different day. That is Bali Pratipada (Bali Padayami in Kannada).
That is in Diwali. The same story goes for that.
Thanks and Regards,
Vilas D. Virdhe
