Vivek,

The following pages have links to over two dozen news reports and
analysis articles that appeared in the US and UK press about the
acquisition.

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/fc/Business/Hewlett_Packard_Compaq_Merger/
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/fc/Business/Hewlett_Packard_Compaq_Merger/news_stories_1.html

And to answer Anirudh and Net Geek's email, HP is buying Compaq.
Technically, it is an acquisition since HP is paying $25 billion
for Compaq. However, since both companies are nearly equal, it
could also be considered a merger. The chart at:
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/p/nm/20010904/ts/hpcompaq_merger_graphic.html
shows the financial details of these two companies.

IBM is still the largest computer company. It may be weak in PC sales
but it dominates in almost all other segments - from mainframes to
notebooks. HP has been trying to get into the services business
for a while. They made a bid for PriceWaterhouseCoopers last year
but that did not go anywhere. Compaq has a strong services division
and I am sure that played a big role in the decision to buy them.

The new company will match IBM across all products lines - from
high end servers and storage to PCs and notebooks. Dell is very strong
in desktops and notebooks but does not have the wide range of IBM or
now, HPaq.

Note that the deal is not done yet. The shareholders as well as the
federal regulators have to approve it. HPaq will probably have to
sell of some divisions to comply with the anti-trust (anti-competitive)
rules.

Of course, the articles linked from the above sites will give you
much more information.

P.S. http://dailynews.yahoo.com/fc/ is a valuable way to get information
on current topics. This full coverage (the 'fc') links to various press
reports and gives quick access to many write-ups.
