Rohit,
Consider the source of the majority of Indian and Western popular
music. A large portion (80% or more) of Indian popular music
originates in movies. The filmi situations that inspire people to
burst into song typically have more than one person. Since many of
the filmi songs are duets or group songs, a larger portion of Indian
songs have more than one singer.
Compare the non-filmi Indian music to the Western popular music and
you will find many parallels. Most of these songs are created by
single artists or by groups. Even the group songs typically have
multiple singers in chorus and not in the duet form.
There have been a few cases where a couple of artists or two
groups combined to create songs. But these are the exception.
