I used to ask the exact same uestion - until I got my own laptop.

Let me explain.

In the US, those who live in their own houses, have the equivalent of
a bungalow in India. Space being no problem, it is the 'American
Dream' to own one's own house.

In my house, the basement (the level of the house below the ground
floor) is finished and I put my PC and network connection (DSL/Cable
modem) etc right there. For the first 7-8 years, I used to go
downstairs to work on the desktop PC that was doenstairs. It got on my
wife's nerves - and my kids too. As a result, they used to refer to
the PC as my 'first wife'.

I got a wireless router, established it in the basement and got myself
a laptop as well. My trips downstairs have stopped completely. I
browse when needed on the main level (ground floor) and everyone s
happy - and my wife and kids hate me now for not letting go of the TV
remote ;-)

Oh well - you win some, you lose some.
