[nukkad] What was this movie?

This is not a quiz - I don't know the answer to this and figured the
'nukkad' collective must know.

The movie had Amol Palekar and Ashok Kumar. I am sure there was a
female lead too but I can't remember who it was. Amol Palekar plays a
simpleton who eventually becomes smart and world-wise under Ashok
Kumar's training.

It was one of those light-hearted movies without any sneering baddies
or heavy melodrama. It was probably released in the 80s.

Anyone know?
