The last question reminded me of my neighborhood desi store owner. He
drove a couple of video rental places out of business by selling
bootleg VHS cassettes for a dollar each - the same price at which the
rental guys were renting the same movies.

So we started buying the movies from this guy. We didn't notice
anything amiss till we saw 'Veer Zara' and the story didn't make
sense. It was as if there was an illogical plot jump. We shook our
heads at the illogical Bollywood storyline and went on with our life.
A few days later, someone mentioned the movie and we commented on how
illogical that part was. They looked at us as if we were spouting
gibberish and went on to explain the plot. It made perfect sense! They
added that that we probably nodded off during the movie. Then it
dawned on us that the movie we watched was missing about 15 minutes of
the plotline about 2/3rds of the way through.

The next time we were in the store, I told the guy that the movie was
incomplete - thinking that it was a mistake. He replied, "Bhai, ek
dollar mein poora movie thoda milega?" ("Brother, you want the whole
movie for a dollar?"). I was floored. Couldn't argue with his logic.

We continue to get our movies from him and every movie is now a
guessing game - did we watch the whole thing? Or did we miss some
crucial plot point? This uncertainty adds a whole new dimension to our
movie-watching experience that didn't exist before. Thanks,
neighborhood desi store owner!
