Re: [nukkad] Farmers' suicide

Mumbai Grapevine from Sep 26 includes the following item:

"Eight farmers end lives in Vidarbha"

It says who and how but nothing about why.

I have read a paper on this problem in Maharashtra, especially in
Vidarbha area. The stats were rather depressing. The problem seems to
have existed since the '90s, but only now begins to find its way to the
media.

I have never been a fundamentalist critic of globalisation, but it
definitely has its ugly face too.

Anna.
=====================================================
This reveals the humanist side of Anna. All in all, in the last 15 years
more than 21,000 farmers have ended their lives, mostly in Maharashtra's
Vidarbha region followed by Marathwada areas, Telangana in Andhra
Pradesh, few places of Karnataka and Amreli district in north Gujarat.
Of the total some 15,000 suicides have occured in Vidarbha ( known as
Berar in the Muslim rule period ) alone. Since the PM's visit to the area
and his offer of relief measures some 1,000 have died.
Reasons are many. Ill effects of globalization is one factor and ill social
practices with superstitious personal beliefs is another factor besides
government apathy etc. etc. For your additional information, all these
unfortunate suicides are by Hindus, no Muslim, no Christian, no Sikh,
no Budhist, no Zoroastrian. Sociological matters got to be studied in
the light of proper demographical context and analysis. Broad
generalisation hardly helps. For sharp understanding you have to get
down to specifics.
Again, the humanist in Anna pulsates.

Rohit Zaveri.
