The FACTS from vidarbha are more depressing than the STATS. It is observed that 
1 farmer commits suicide every eight hours. Mounting debts is the main reason.

The reasons for mounting debts are many

- Vagaries of nature resulting in falied crops

- Geographical & demographic barriers 

- Lack of infrastructure in respect of irrigation and later marketing of the 
produce

- Non existence of proper Social / Spritual / Political leadership

- Social stigma : High cost of marriages of daughters

- Private moneylenders and thier demonic rates of interest. These moneylenders 
ultimately take away the piece of land in lieu of repayment of their loan, thus 
taking away the sole purpose of a farmer's life

- Agricultural loans by the banks are not utilised for the purpose of 
agriculture and the funds are diverted elsewhere

Banks are giving benefits of Vidarbha Package to the borrowers. It involves all 
the interest so far accumulated on old loans to be borne by the banks / 
government keeping the principal portion of the loan as it is for repayment as 
per convenience of the borrower.  Sanctioning of fresh crop loans even though 
the earlier loans are outstanding.

However these measures are not sufficient to give relief to the farmers.
