Synopsis of year 2001

It was a disappointing year for most of 2001. It was only in the middle of the year that Aamir Khan's 'Lagaan' and Sunny Deol's 'Gadar' opened the gates to the box-office. In spite of the fact that the two films were released together, they were super hits. 'Lagaan' even being entered as India's official (Best Foreign Film Category) entry to the Oscars this year.

At the same time, much awaited films which promised a lot but failed to stay on the box-office crashing through out the year were Subhash Ghai's 'Yaadein' , Rakesh Mehra's Amitabh-Manoj Bajpai starrer ‘Aks’, Kamal Hasan's 'Abhay' , Priyadarshan's 'supposed' comedy 'Yeh Tera Ghar Yeh Mera Ghar' , Shah Rukh's 'Asoka's ,Abbas-Mustan's 'Ajnabee' and Rajkumar Santoshi's 'Lajja'.

Astoundingly, few films did well during the second half of the year. Films like Farhan Akhtar's 'Dil Chahta Hai', Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Chandni Bar', Nagesh Kukunoor's 'Bollywood Calling' and Mira Nair's 'Monsoon Wedding' won the audience who praises the meaningful cinema with a difference. With comparatively lower budgets, these films managed to give the audience their money's worth and draw in sufficient returns at the same time.

The year ended with the release of Karan Johar's mega-starrer 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' , the film had enough curiosity generated before the release to draw in the crowds. With a starcast of Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh, Kajol, Hrithik and Kareena managed to draw in the largest audiences.
